About the condition

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of persistent disorders of motor development and posture maintenance leading to movement deficits. CP disorders are caused by non-progressive damage and/or abnormality of the developing brain in a fetus or newborn.

At our center we apply a comprehensive rehabilitation approach that includes work with motor impairments, speech and cognitive development, and social adaptation of the child.

Causes

Main causes of CP: intrauterine hypoxia, birth trauma, infections during pregnancy, premature birth, genetic factors. Brain damage occurs during the period of active development.

Symptoms

Muscle tone disorders (spasticity or hypotonia), delayed motor development, coordination and balance impairments, pathological reflexes, possible speech and intellectual disorders.

Diagnostics

Brain MRI, neurological status assessment, motor function analysis using the GMFCS scale, electromyography, consultations with related specialists (orthopedist, speech therapist, psychologist).

Prognosis

With regular rehabilitation, most children achieve significant improvement in motor functions. Early therapy onset substantially increases treatment effectiveness and quality of life.
